Reflection on "After effects" by Lev Manovich (1 page)

The article written by Lev Manovich, gave me a whole new perspective to new digital and visual media. Like what he has stated, the visual and media industry has gone through tremendous change and improvements from the 1970s to 2006 (date of his creation of the article). I agree with his argument saying that commercials, music videos, motion graphics, TV graphics, and other types of short non-narrative films and moving image sequences being produced around the world by the media professionals including companies, individual designers and artists, and students- is hybrid. Today, we can see all kinds of effects and methods in various designing software programs are integrated and create pretty much anything that we want to deliver to the viewers. Manovich says that this hybrid has become the new cultural language, which can be interpreted and used universally. One of the logic behind this universalism is that they use the logic of remixability: that they can beapplied to different medias, as they were made into algorithms. This allowed digital data stored in compatible file formats and software designed to read and write files produced by other programs.
Being an international business major, I thought that this new logic also created simplicity, which stimulated the progression of globalization. The universal quality and its simple homogeneity made companies to easily attract wider array of target groups, enter foreign countries market effectively by integrating universal visual communication, as well as making investments abroad. Today, visually delivered messages work better than any other form of oral message when trying to convey message globally. The growing importance of visual marketing, commercials, and advertisement is undeniable. However, I could not agree with Manovich when he said that this hybridization mostly applied to non-narrative works in the industry. I think that it works equally both on narrative and non-narrative works today. The transparency, layers and compositing techniques are all used in narrative works such as book designs, presentations, musicals etc.
Most interestingly, overall, I think what happened in the digital media industry was creative destruction where newly created products destroy its predecessors—the destruction of monochrome wireframe, obsolete color raster and bulky magnetic tapes about foot in diameter and the introduction of multi linear programs such as After Effects, Photoshop and Flame, Inferno and Quantel Paintbox. It was interesting to see how media industry/ visual media market changed rapidly overtime and wondered how this industry will continue to evolve and transform. What is clear is that companies, artists, and designers will have to be aware. One will be gone tomorrow and one will continue to survive depending on who kept tight tract of the changing industry. I think that the result of Velvet revolutions introduction to numerous new visual aesthetics did not just make things ‘easy’, but also generated challenges and will continue to challenge the creativity and innovativeness of the visual media industry.

Lev Manovich "Augmented Reality" response

Question: To begin with, I would like to ask you what you consider Augmented Reality (AR) to be. In The Poetics of Augmented Space you describe AR as the physical space overlaid with dynamically changing information”. It would be great if you’d address the topic once more. Firstly, because our readers might not have read your article. And secondly, because I think that this point of view unnecessarily limits AR to the visual sense.

Possible answer that I will give on behalf of Manovich: Lev Manovich defines Augmented Reality as, “the physical space overlaid with dynamically changing information”, which is often, but not completely in a multimedia form that is localized to the viewers. Some viewers might think that this concept of augmented reality has been around for a long time, mentioning how historical buildings are covered with paintings, frescos and words on them. However, Manovich makes a distinction between the old and present, the environment that we’re in today, by stretching this to the technological phenomenon such as buildings covered with electronic screens with moving images and scenes, gifs and digital texts that can be delivered virtually by wireless technology to our electronic devices. In this article, Manovich is not focusing on the technology of augmented reality, but the human experience influenced by it. Whether it is ubiquitous computing, tangible interface, wireless location services or context aware-computing the general end product is the same, which is overlaying physical space with the data. The augmented space (physical space) is often done by monitoring, so it is also called as monitored space. Augmented reality is not only visual, but involves further physicality such as touching, hearing and being actual in actual spaces.
